Arranged Marriages of the European Royal Families
Intended to Keep the Peace in the Balkans
Dress and Vanity Fair, 1913
By the time this item appeared in print, the Balkan War (1912 - 1913) was over, however some of the swells of Europe put their crowned heads together and collectively came up with the best Medeival plan they could think of in order to insure the promise of peace. It was agreed that the Czar’s daughter, Grand Duchess Olga (1895 - 1918), would wed Serbia’s Crown Prince Alexander (1888 - 1934); while the Czar’s second daughter, Grand Duchess Tatiana (1897 - 1918) was promised to Romania’s Crown Prince Charles (1893 - 1959). All concerned felt that Romania’s Princess Elizabeth (1894 - 1956) and Crown Prince George of Greece (1890 - 1947) would make a simply splendid couple (they divorced in 1935).

It has been announced in diplomatic circles, that a future alliance of the Balkan peoples, who have been at war for the past year and at odds for many years in the past, is to be cemented by the marriages of Crown Prince George of Greece to Princess Elizabeth of Roumania; and of Crown Princes of Servia and Roumania to Olga and Tatiana, the daughters of Czar. These inter-marriages, it is hoped, will help end the bitterness between the nations. The Karageorgevitch family of Servia is not related to big European royalties, but it is looking for a rise in the world. Montenegro got one when Helenea married Victor Emanuel of Italy. Her sisters and cousins will not envy the Russian Grand Duchess who is assinged to Belgrade.

When the Nazis invade Russia, Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya quit the tenth grade at Moscow. Hair-cropped, and in men’s clothes, the 18-year old joined the Resistance and became one of its most celebrated heros. The Germans finally captured her in November 1941, and subjected her to various tortures — which included belts, punches, lighters, saws and bayonets.  She refused to talk and the Germans led her to the gallows with a card inscribed “Guerrilla” about her neck.
There, at the village square of Petrisheva, Zoya gave her courageous speech: “You hang me now but I am not alone. There are 200 million of us. You won’t hang everybody. I shall be avenged. Soldiers! Surrender before it is too late. Victory will be ours.” She was hanged, and the Germans left the body hanging on the gallows for several weeks. Eventually she was buried just before the Soviet liberation of Petrisheva in January 1942

Sepasang Burung

Kuberimu sebuah kisah agar kelak kau tak lagi bimbang.

Mari kita terbang bersama.

Hujan mengguyurnya bila ingin, mentari menyinarinya tiap pagi. Tapi ternyata yang kau rawat tak jua tumbuh lagi. Tapi kau merasa kau mendengarnya. Tapi kau lakukan apa yang dipintanya. Tapi mengapa? Tapi kau terus datang, tapi kau terus berharap, tapi mengapa?
